If you're an Independent Professional working on growing your business, you know what it is to be stuck.
There seems to be unlimited ways to get stuck when you're working on marketing your professional services. And only a few of them are due to external circumstances.
Perhaps you get stuck on...
- Creating an effective attention-getting message
- Developing powerful marketing materials
- Initiating various marketing strategies and tactics
- Setting up appointments with well-qualified clients
- Turning selling conversations into new high-end clients
- Growing your list and marketing your business online
- Just finding the time and energy to do marketing
The thing is, there are an endless number of effective strategies to implementing all of the above. You can learn them, you can practice them, you can master them. Thousands have before you, so why not you?
Circumstances or external challenges don't stop you. If they did, then nobody could do them. Think of that for a minute. If these things were impossible to do then it would be a compete waste to time to even try them. But that's not the case. Many people implement these marketing activities consistently and successfully.
No, what stops you are internal challenges. What stops you are your beliefs, thinking and your emotions about the external challenges.
"If you think you can or you think you can't, you're right."
Just think of a challenge that faces many Independent Professionals:
You meet someone at a networking meeting and they show some interest in your services. You get back to your office, intending to call them but you don't. You notice your thinking going a mile a minute:
"I'll seem too pushy if I call. If I call, I'll just be an interruption. I'm not sure my services are for them, anyway. If they're interested, they'll call me."
And in the pit of your stomach you feel fear, uncertainty and hopelessness. And you don't make the call.
You want to do online marketing and you even take a course to learn how. But you soon realize that it's not as easy as it looks and your enthusiasm wanes. You do a few things to grow your list, to write a sales letter, to set up a web page and a shopping cart. But before long you're overwhelmed and start thinking this isn't such a good idea anymore. A few months later, this online marketing project has gone the way of the dinosaurs.
Yes, you can learn a number of effective techniques to make those follow-up calls or do online marketing. But your limiting beliefs tend to prevent you from taking the next step. Again, it's never the external challenges that stop you, but how you think about those challenges.
Let's look more closely at the kind of avoidance behavior keep you in the comfort zone.
"Your can have anything you want if you will give up the belief that you can't have it."
How do you react to these challenging marketing situations?
It's useful to see how we react instead of taking action. How many of these are you familiar with, and how many have you done in the last week or month?
- You engage in several "creative" avoidance strategies
- You justify to yourself that this is not something you'll ever be good at
- You feel bad about yourself and indulge in self-blame
- You tell yourself that you'll never be good at marketing, no matter what
- Your negative self-talk crowds out any creative thinking
- You have great intentions, but they rarely turn into definite plans and actions
And all of these activities only tend to reinforce each other. There doesn't seem to be a way out, unless you force yourself to do things that feel uncomfortable, that is, outside your current comfort zone.
"If you put yourself in a position where you have to stretch outside your comfort zone, then you are forced to expand your consciousness."
So what are you going to do?
You like the idea of being self-employed, but it's such a struggle. Most of the time you spend thinking about and trying to implement marketing is mostly in resisting and avoiding these marketing activities.
And the more you avoid, the worse it gets. I've been there! I remember in the first years of marketing myself how much of a struggle it was. Any marketing I did took so much effort. I'd spend a whole day just avoiding certain activities. My best friends became the refrigerator, television and my bed, my partners in avoidance!
"One of the best ways of avoiding necessary and even urgent tasks is to seem to be busily employed on things that are already done."
John Kenneth Galbraith
What if you could change your thinking?
Well, that sounds easy. But if it was so easy why is it so hard to do? If you knew how to do it, wouldn't you just do it? "Stop thinking negatively and start thinking positively." Well, it's a lot of work to do that and it often doesn't work at all.
Why it's so hard to change your thinking is that your thinking is not a cause, it's an effect. Your negative and hopeless thinking about marketing are effects of other thoughts and beliefs. This is why just making superficial changes doesn't work very well. For instance, you try to change a habit and in a few days the habit is back as strong as ever. That's because the belief that supported the habit is still there.
So what are you going to do? How do you change your beliefs and your thinking that results in avoidance of the marketing activities that could lead to so much success?
"If you don't change your beliefs, your life will be like this forever. Is that good news?"
W. Somerset Maugham
This is how beliefs work:
You have a belief that was formed as a result of some unpleasant or painful experience. For instance, you bought something that didn't live up to the hype, and started to believe that marketing was fundamentally dishonest. So any of your thinking about marketing will reflect that belief. We may think about how unpleasant marketing is and how we, as professionals, shouldn't get involved in marketing. And then if we try to do some marketing, we find it repugnant. And of course, then we're going to avoid it.
Beliefs are always working on us. Beliefs generate related thoughts, these thoughts generate feelings, and these feelings generate actions. And in this case, the actions are all about avoidance.
"What we can or cannot do, what we consider possible or impossible, is rarely a function of our true capability. It is more likely a function of our beliefs about who we are."
So, it's hopeless, right?
Not at all. The key is to clearly see how those beliefs are controlling our thinking and feelings and then undermining those beliefs by examining them closely and seeing that they are not true at all.
And when a belief is examined like this, a wonderful thing happens. It disappears.
This is something almost nobody understands fully. We think that by working against our resistance, by trying harder, we'll succeed. But if that belief is still firmly in place, we'll only create more resistance. No, we have to get to the source of our thinking and feelings, discover those beliefs and undermine them at their source.
Knowing exactly how to identify and examine these underlying beliefs is the key.
"There is only one cause of unhappiness: the false beliefs you have in your head, beliefs so widespread, so commonly held, that it never occurs to you to question them."
Anthony de Mello
I've been doing this work with my clients for over ten years.
Wanting to help my clients get unstuck, I learned a number of techniques for examining beliefs and then refined these approaches, especially for this issue of marketing avoidance. I realized that if people could rid themselves of their resistance to marketing, they would find their marketing challenges shrink considerably.
Over the years I've seen client results that were greatly supported by this work on examining beliefs. Once their limiting beliefs diminished or disappeared, these kind of results showed up consistently:
- Talking about their businesses confidently, with much less self-consciousness
- Following up easily with prospects and getting appointments
- Creating high-end programs and services that were way beyond their previous comfort zones
- Managing marketing technology they once thought was impossible
- Doubling their fees or increasing them substantially
- Committing to getting better high-end clients and succeeding at that
"We all have possibilities we don't know about. We can do things we don't even dream we can do."
In the past few months I've learned some things that make this getting unstuck approach even more effective.
You see, it's not just getting at beliefs. It's getting at "Core Beliefs." Core Beliefs provide a solid foundation that is designed to keep us safe. That sounds good at one level. But these core beliefs tend to be fear-based. They prevent us from doing risky things. And they make sure we avoid marketing activities. These beliefs don't have a long-term vision!
The work of discovering and undermining these Core Beliefs is what this Virtual Workshop is all about.
Introducing the Ultimate Course on Getting Unstuck
Right now, there's a very good chance you're stuck in your marketing. And the only way to really get unstuck, to get unstuck permanently, is to learn how to discover, examine and rout out these disempowering core beliefs.
The process is not difficult, complicated or time-consuming. It's surprisingly easy. You just need to understand exactly how to do it.
Results in half a day, not weeks or months
You can learn how to get rid of your Core Beliefs in half a day. No, you won't get rid of ALL of them in half a day, but you'll get rid of a few and have the tools to get rid of any more when they rear their ugly heads.
What may happen is a big realization or ah-ha. I remember when I first did this work over ten years ago. I was very, very stuck and procrastinating about everything. After doing the process, it's as if my negative mood lifted from me like a cloud evaporating. Everything I was procrastinating about got done that day. And then for several months I couldn't even find procrastination anymore! My productivity and creativity soared and I did things in my business that had been impossible for me before.
"The belief that one's own view of reality is the only reality is the most dangerous of all illusions."
